Residents at Independence Hall Senior Living had a blast promoting a love of reading across generations this July with a special initiative, Read Across America.
Inspired by the spirit of “Christmas in July,” residents at the senior living community got busy preparing a series of curated books, all Caldecott Award Winners, to present to their young neighbors at Jack & Jill Children’s Center in Fort Lauderdale.
The curated book collection focuses on themes of diversity, self-acceptance, compassion, and environmental awareness. The residents received valuable assistance in selecting the perfect reads from the Wilton Manors Library, whose librarians helped identify books with engaging illustrations, compelling subjects, and age-appropriate content.
“We wanted to find a meaningful way to connect with the children in our community,” said Sonja Jorgensen, Administrator at Independence Hall Senior Living. “Reading is a powerful tool that builds empathy, understanding, and a love of learning. Our residents have enjoyed connecting with the kids, and it’s nice to see them share their wisdom and passion for stories with the next generation.”
The program ran throughout July at Jack & Jill Children’s Center in Fort Lauderdale.
